In the mid-60s I dropped out of a corporate electronics career, first to go hitch-hiking in Europe, and then to become a free-lance writer and photographer. In 1969 I published my first book, "Hitch-Hiking in Europe." The expanded and revised edition was published by Random House in 1971 as "Vagabonding in Europe & No. Africa," and in 1973 its sequel "Vagabonding in America" appeared. These books were the original counter-culture travel guides and paved the way for the backpack travel revolution that followed. At about the same time, in 1972, my photo-essay book "Two Births" helped legitimize the home-birth and midwifery movement.
Since then I have continued working as a photojournalist, with published credits in hundreds of periodicals and books. In 1977 and then again in 1985, I was a prizewinner in the Nikon International Photo Contest. In 1985 my second photo-essay book was published: Mission Creek, San Francisco. I am listed in American Photographers (1989) and Who's Who In Photography (1991). I also became a professional book editor and have edited numerous books for both publishers and authors. During the 90s I designed the William Blake Tarot deck being published in late 1995 by Harper Collins.
I currently do free-lance photography, writing, editing, design, and publishing. As an artist, I try to express what can't be imagined but can be seen and felt. In this sense, I consider myself a visual poet. Whatever I express has a human focus or purpose, hence my motto: "I've you in the eye-view I view."
